Remi Rubel

Bio
Billboard paper, bottle caps, and road-kill are fabulous materials for making art. Remi Rubel is a firm believer in reuse. In 1986, she became the "Bottle Cap Queen" for inventively transforming soda and beer caps into beautiful jewelry, clothing and tapestries. Her whimsical sculptures are made of salvaged metals found flattened in the streets and crumpled billboard paper.

In addition to creating artwork, she loves instructing youth and adults in the art of "Transformation." She finds teaching challenging, rewarding and deeply satisfying work.

Reflection
This past March, my 95-year old grandfather spent his final days in Chicago's Northwestern Hospital Hospice Facility. Thankfully, the hospice there helped to make his passing smooth and peaceful.

While making this mask, I often thought of my grandfather. He was a loving man, who was practical, honest, extremely bright and very silly. He had the ability to see the underlying good in all situations.

For 30 years, he owned a craft supply company that took art materials from society's discards (broken tiles, old buttons, single clip-on earrings) and made them accessible to children in youth organizations and hospitals.

By reusing billboard paper in decorating this mask, it is my way of continuing to keep his spirit alive. I'm sure he would be happy that I had a great time making it!
