Bio
My name is Sheila Edwards-May and where I am from is unimportant. I choose a world without labels, walls, borders and pigeonholes, all things, which divide and separate. In this I am simply a globalist, a citizen of planet Earth. As such I'm an advocate for things that gel, combine and harmonize and apply these principles in my daily life as a parent, as a community member and as an artist. I have had the good fortune to travel extensively around the globe and I am perpetually awed by the experience of life and the infinite web of possibilities in the universe. I reside in Half Moon Bay with my son, Nicholas, and have a glass-arts gallery/gift shop on Main Street.
Reflection
This mask presented itself in my head as a combination of many beloved places visited. It was started and completed on two consecutive evenings, July 25th and 26th, 2000. The image for July in The Scotsman Calendar suggested the water lilies. The locale might be the shores of lake Okarito on New Zealand's South Island where the Kotuku roost seasonally in the thousands. It may even be an early dawn or twilight in the Hanalei valley or a lagoon in the Tennessee valley of Marin County.
I have always had an affinity for the wading bird: cranes and herons, but most specifically the egret. I admire their patience, their sleekness and their stark contrast to their pastoral surroundings. This image is one of tranquil peace and beauty where the painting, like life itself , is born of many parts each dependent on the other to create the whole.
