A native Californian, Ms. McCaron studied ceramics during the 1960s and 1970s at the College of San Mateo, using the Raku method. In 1989, she did a series of Raku masks and, in 1994, participated in the Marin, California, open studios with Raku sculptures and busts titled "witty titties." Ms. McCaron loves masks and paper mache.
Thoughts:
I visited Tulmec, Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula in 1990 and I think the Mexican and Mayan influence came out in this mask! I really had fun with it, using primary colors, plus fluorescent and metallic paints ; I finished it with three coats of varnish.
