After obtaining a B.F.A. from Carnegie Mellon University in 1989, Kurt Shaw began his career as a cartoonist and illustrator. Although his cartoons were published in several national publications, including Cosmopolitan and Esquire, he subsequently turned his attention to fine art. In addition to his other creative output, he has done several commissions for both corporate and personal spaces. Shaw's work can be seen in a variety of settings, including on the deck of Royal Caribbean's 'Sovereign of the Seas.' He currently lives and works in the San Francisco Bay area.
Thoughts:
My work is lyrically abstract, with chemical and biological associations. It represents the distillation of process, movement and reaction in literal terms, as well as my own visual language. I try to make art that people can enjoy living with or working around; which has harmony and is free of agenda. Abstraction allows direct access to dealing with harmonious relationships. My work is sometimes associated with deep space or the deep ocean and I like these comparisons because I feel my work has a natural flow and organic quality.
