As practiced by Joan Moore, and thousands of other quilters past and present, the craft of quilting becomes art as exciting and innovative as any art form has ever been. The development of fabrics specifically for quilting enables unlimited new creative directions in pattern and pictorial design. Ms. Moore is a member of Peninsula Quilters which has more than 250 members. Guild members display their work in regional quilt shows and State and County Fairs.
Thoughts:
Because fabric is the media in which I work, my mask is designed in fabric. I incorporated two motifs from old traditional quilt designs. On the face are four patches combined as a block, known as the "Winding Ways" pattern which was originated by the Ladies Art Society of St. Louis in the early 1900s. The group of triangles which form the hair and beard are "Prairie Points," found on the edges of some pioneer quilts where triangular scraps of fabric served as the binding instead of long strips of fabric that were harder to come by.
