1999 Collection - Dennis G. Carr

A visual and performing artist/educator, Mr. Carr works with teachers and students in first through twelfth grades to involve young people in working with and supporting all the arts…dance, drama, music, and visual art. California born and educated as a graphic designer and calligrapher, he taught art education/appreciation at San Francisco State University, Dominican College and College of Notre Dame. He holds M.A.s in Fine Arts and Arts Administration.

Thoughts…

This year, I conducted a concurrent ceramic mask project with children in grades 1-6 as part of an arts program for exceptional children so they could see me "doing the creative thing," not just hearing talk about it. In creating this mask design, I changed direction several times. This mask began as a blend of different faces and cultures (classroom population inspired this). But, during the first firing, some parts didn’t mature, requiring re-painting and glazing; then in the second firing, I lost everything! Although ready to throw it out and quit, I saw the situation as an opportunity to teach students how one can creatively resolve an accident. I used some paint, spray and theatre make-up glitter to cover-up – a ‘makeover,’ as the kids say. We had a creative summer session; the kids loved their masks and also learned that Hospice is a warm and caring foundation which reaches out.
