Artist's Statement
Ideas come to me in dreams or at the edge of sleep. When I start to put these on paper or canvas, they usually take on a life of their own, evolving as the hands move across the work, sometimes surprising me by becoming the antithesis of the original thought. Organic motifs in my paintings often reflect my experience as an electron microscopist and cell biologist. I am most moved by nature's beauties as well as by its terrors and the musical ideas others have developed on these themes.
COMMENTS
This mask symbolizes the romance and pathos of Chopin's piano music, particularly evident in the Nocturne series. Collaged onto the surface are images of the Delacroix portraits of Chopin and of his lover, the writer George Sand (Madam Deduvant), and of Nocturne scores. Although Chopin had expressed a wish to die in George Sand's arms, the couple had been estranged for two years prior to his death and there was no deathbed reconciliation. I have placed the lovers on opposite sides of the mask to symbolized their separation. The mask represents my impression of beauty, love, melancholy, and death implied by the Nocturnes.
